District Interview

November 21, 2007

I had my district interview a few days ago. This was the last step before I find out if I get to go on rotary or not….!

The interview had three different parts: a group interview, a private interview, and an interview with parents. The group interview came first. I was in a group of five people, and we were instructed to choose three of the five questions on the chalk board in the room to discuss. We picked 1) Should the drinking age be lowered? Why or why not?, 2) Are there any circumstances under which lying is acceptable?, and 3) Discuss the most difficult situation or challenge you have ever faced. The interviewees didn’t talk at all during this portion of the interview; they just took notes. The five of us debated and came up with one answer for each, except for number 3, which was individual, obviously.

The second part of the interview was my private interview. It was just me in a room with five interviewees. They asked me all sorts of questions. First were the questions about me, such as: What do you spend your free time doing? or What do you like most about your town? Then came the US history questions, such as: When was the civil war fought? or What was the last state to be admitted to our country? Finally, the current events questions were asked, such as: Why has Pakistan been in the news lately? or What is the average cost of a barrel of crude oil?

The final portion of the interview was the interview with my parents and me. They asked my parents questions like if they supported me going on the trip, etc. I had a lot of fun during the interview. I understand it’s very competitive, so I’m a little worried about that… Oh well, I’ll have to wait and see. I’ll find out if I’ve made it in or not in mid-December. Until then, all I can do is wait.
